U.S. NGO Office Egypt: Assault

WASHINGTON -United States Government regrets the attack carried out by the forces of Egypt to the offices of non-governmental organizations (NGOS) that receive foreign assistance funds.

"We believe that NGOS play a role in supporting democracy. Some NGOS which are supported by U.S. institutions and have been working around the world in helping to bring about democracy in many countries, "said Foreign Ministry spokesman AS Victoria Nuland Reuterswas quoted as saying, Friday (30/12/2011).

Nuland also urged the Government to immediately stop the action of the Egypt who harass the NGO staff.

Around 17 pro-democracy NGOS and human rights institutions be terget in this attack. Some NGOS are contained within the target of an attack such as the International Republican Institute (IRI), National Democratic Institute (NDI), and Freedom House, which is a group of watchdogs of democracy.

Attacks against offices of NGOS was considered to have menciderai the ongoing democratic process in Egypt as well as to bring Egypt back on authoritarian regimes.

Egypt's Government promised to immediately investigate the attack. But the Government of Egypt also warned it would not tolerate foreign interference in domestic affairs related Egypt.(rhs)
