MANILA -the death toll from tropical storm Washi increased to 180 people and nearly 400 people were declared missing in the flooding that hit the southern Philippines.
Philippine military spokesman said 97 bodies were found in Cagayan de Oro, the main port on the island of Mindanao, and 75 were found in the city of Iligan. As many as 375 people were declared missing.
Military officer Colonel Leopoldo Gallon says army using trucks, boats, and helicopters have rescued at least 2,000 residents of Cagayan de Oro. So reported the Japan Today Saturday, (17/12/2011).
Tropical storm Washi struck the East coast of the island on Friday (4/12/2011), also triggered a landslide that killed five people, while three people drowned in the southern city of Polanco.
The storm is expected to traverse the Western island of Palawan on Saturday night after earlier across the Sulu sea with peak wind speeds of 75 kilometers per hour, the Agency said the weather observer.
