Typhoon Washi Took Southern Philippines

MANILA -tropical storm Washi has swept the region South of the Philippines and led to the occurrence of floods. Up to now 14 people reported killed.

Philippine troops have deployed 20,000 soldiers to help rescue and evacuation efforts in the southern island of Mindanao that impacted most severely, said civil defense officials, Benito Ramos was quoted as saying Friday AFP (17/12/2011).

Eleven people drowned in the region, the following three others in a nearby town while one person was reported missing in Cagayan de Oro, he added.

The flood hit the area of Cagayan de Oro, Dipolog City and Iligan City which has a population of around 900,000 people.

Ramos added he had no definite figure concerning the death toll as the Government focused on rescue efforts.

Meteorologists say the storm agency across the city of Dipolog on Tuesday (17/12/2011) in the early hours and is now moving towards the Sulu sea.

Philippines hit by around 20 major storms each year, and most of the hit Luzon, the largest and most populous of the islands of Southeast Asia.(fmh)
